The Residence Permit for Family Reasons is the required residence title for non-EU citizens who have entered Italy with a visa for Family Reasons following the issuance of a Nulla Osta (no impediment) for Family Reunification. The procedure must be completed at the Single Immigration Desk (SUI) of the Prefecture – UTG within 8 days of the worker’s entry into the territory – in certain cases.

The Residence Permit for Family Reasons has the same duration as the Residence Permit of the family member already residing in Italy and to which it is linked (the first is issued according to a one-year visa, and in any case, cannot exceed two years) and is renewable together with the latter, in case the family member in Italy holds a long-term permit, the residence permit for dependents will be two years upon the first renewal and subsequent renewals. The Residence Permit for Family Reasons allows for any work or study activity.

Initial issuance of the Residence Permit for Family Reasons The non-EU foreign citizen must go to the competent Prefecture (reference: Single Immigration Desk) within 8 days from the date of entry into Italy to complete the entry procedure, sign the Integration Agreement, and request the issuance of the Residence Permit. After verifying the validity of the visa and documentation, the Prefecture provides pre-filled forms for the Residence Permit application to be sent in a specific envelope through authorized Post Offices.

The following must be attached to the application:

Form 1 of model 209 (postal kit – sample for viewing) properly filled out;

Copy of the valid passport or equivalent document (pages containing personal data, photograph, stamps, visas), it is important to copy the visa used to enter Italy and the entry stamp;

Copy of the document of the holder of the residence permit residing in Italy;

In some cases (often for children), documentation proving the family relationship with the non-EU foreign citizen regularly residing in Italy and who has requested the Nulla Osta for Family Reunification may be required. If produced abroad, it must be translated into Italian, or multilingual, and legalized by the Italian Embassy or Consulate or apostilled if coming from a country that adheres to the Hague Convention;

Stamp duty of €16.00.
