The Entry Visa for Medical Treatment Purposes (type “National Visa”) is an authorization that allows entry into Italy for a short or long-term stay, always for a specified period, to non-EU foreign citizens who need to undergo medical treatments at accredited Italian hospitals, either public or private.
The non-EU foreign citizen must submit the following documentation to the Italian Embassy or Consulate in their country of origin or residence:
Application form for entry visa;
Recent passport-sized photograph;
Valid travel document with an expiration date of at least three months beyond the requested visa’s validity period;
Medical documentation including: a) Medical documentation issued in the country of residence attesting to the actual illness; b) Declaration from the Italian public or private healthcare facility (the latter must be accredited by the National Health Service) indicating the type of treatment, start date, duration, and estimated cost; c) Confirmation from the Italian healthcare facility verifying the deposit of at least 30% of the estimated cost of the requested procedure, or alternatively, a specific regional resolution or authorization issued by the Ministry of Health as part of humanitarian programs;
Documentation proving the availability of sufficient resources in Italy to cover the remaining healthcare expenses, as well as food and accommodation outside the healthcare facility, and for the repatriation of the patient and any accompanying person;
Health insurance for any accompanying persons of the patient, with a minimum coverage of €30,000, covering necessary expenses for emergency hospitalization and repatriation costs;
Round-trip booking or ticket or proof of availability of personal transportation means, including for any accompanying person.
Please note: Due to specific local agreements approved by the European Commission, the required documents may be wholly or partly different from those listed. Please contact the relevant Italian Embassy or Consulate for further information.
The entry visa allows the non-EU foreign citizen (and their accompanying person, if any) to enter the national territory regularly and apply for the corresponding Residence Permit.
